The British winter is unpredictable and bad weather can strike suddenly. The best advice when severe weather hits is to stay off the road but if you must drive, make sure you are prepared for the conditions. Before you set off: Try to get up at least 10 minutes early, to give you time to de-ice the car. Use a cigarette lighter to warm a key for a frozen lock. Plan your route to favour major roads, which are more likely to be cleared and gritted. Check fuel levels – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.
