Tesla unveil the Model 3

Tesla has finally unveiled the highly anticipated Model 3, hours after fans around the globe already began lining up at its stores to order the luxury brand’s new affordable vehicle. The company’s chief executive Elon Musk dramatically revealed a red, silver and matte black model of the electric car after a lengthy talk that covered the company’s dedication to the environment and journey to affordability, stating that the five-seater Tesla Model 3 would start at $35,000 (£24,423) and have a range of at least 215 miles (346km) per charge. He added that his goal was to produce about 500,000 vehicles a year once production got up to full speed. Government extends Plug-in Car Grant until at least February 2016

The Government has announced that the current Plug-in Car Grant will continue until at least February 2016 with a longer-term plan to be announced after the November spending review. The move is intended to boost electric vehicle take-up and will see motorists and business fleets continue to be offered up to £5,000 off the price of an electric car for all categories of vehicle. Previously the Government had announced that grant levels would be reviewed once 50,000 vehicles had been sold, with this milestone expected to be reached in November this year. Further details about how the plug-in car grant will be structured beyond February are expected following the Government Spending Review in November. Companies could save £350,000 by switching 10% of their fleets to electric

// Companies could cut the running costs of their fleets by an average of £350,000 and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 5% (830 tonnes) each year by replacing 10% of their current vehicles with electric models. The potential savings were identified in a British Gas study, conducted by TRL, the UK’s Transport Research Laboratory. The report found that converting 50% of a fleet to electric vehicles would result in an average annual cost saving of £1,753,000 for companies and reduce CO2 emissions in Britain by around 26% (2,320,000 tonnes). The report found that some sectors can achieve greater benefits than others from a 10% switch to electric vehicles.
