Government look to convert public sector fleets to EVs

Plans to encourage public sector car fleets to take up electric vehicles have been announced as the Government unveils its infrastructure spending plan. The National Infrastructure Plan commits over £375bn of planned public and private sector investment to energy, transport, communications and water projects and includes the announcement that the Government is to take forward steps to convert public sector car fleets to electric vehicles, investing £5m in a pilot during the year 2014 to 2015. The National Infrastructure Plan also includes the announcement of plans to make the UK a world centre for the testing and development of driverless cars, with the Government adding that it will conduct a review to ensure that the legislative and regulatory framework to support this aim, reporting late 2014. ‘My Electric Avenue’ community electric car trials are underway

The £9m My Electric Avenue project, hosted by Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution (SSEPD), and led by EA Technology, is testing the impact of electric vehicles on the local electricity network. The project has announced the communities that have been successful in applying to take part in its ‘Technical Trials’, and unveil details of the next stage of customer-based research, the ‘Social Trials’. Almost 2,000 registrations for the Technical Trials were received in the first six months of the project, with the successful communities coming from Chiswick, Marlow, South Gosforth, South Shields, Wylam, Chineham and Whiteley. That’s seven clusters, of ten people in each, which means that the targets set for the project by Ofgem have been achieved four months ahead of schedule. The winners of the 2013 GreenFleet Awards were announced at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday October 17, where Fifth Gear presenter Jonny Smith revealed the winners.
