New FTA app aids driver walk-around checks

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has launched a new internet-based app which enables drivers to carry out their vehicle walk-around checks with the aid of an electronic device. Compatible with iPod, iPhone, iPad and a selected range of Android devices, the FTA says that the app cuts down on any errors or inefficiencies associated with paper inspections. It also complies with VOSA’s safety and maintenance guide and is available in formats for vans, trucks, coaches and buses. Quick reference bar codes are placed on a vehicle at key inspection points, allowing users to “scan, inspect, transmit and track” the vehicle with the FTA Drivers’ Walk Around Check app. These weather resistant label tags contain information about the driver, vehicle, inspection point and the components to be checked. If defects or advisories are found they can be selected from a pre-defined list within the system,…

Get tough on texting drivers, says IAM

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is calling for tougher and more consistent penalties for drivers convicted of causing death by dangerous driving. The road safety charity carried out analysis of 11 recent prosecutions involving mobile and smartphone use, which revealed that the average sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is four-and-a-half years in prison and a disqualification from driving for seven years. In all of the cases analysed, the convicted drivers were found to have lost their concentration due to using their mobile phone. In two cases the incidents led to the death of a pedestrian. The vast majority of the public agree that that using a mobile phone while driving is clearly unsafe. Yet, since 2006, 750,000 fixed penalties have been issued to drivers for this very reason. IAM chief executive Simon Best said: ‘The maximum sentence available to the courts…

Get SMART about repairs to reduce fleet costs

Fleet managers could be saving tens of thousands of pounds in end-of-life de-fleeting costs by opting for ongoing SMART repair work throughout the life of the lease. So says bodyshop distribution network ACIS after carrying out bodyshop data analysis. So-called SMART – Small to Medium Area Repair– technology is now being increasingly used mid-lease when cars go in for servicing. According to ACIS, a typical BMW rear bumper with slight damage would cost around £300 to repair at the end of contract based upon the menu price, but a SMART repair mid-lease would be two-thirds lower. Across a fleet of 500 vehicles, this type of repair would save £120,000. Research by ACIS suggested that dealerships, on average, service 20 cars a day and sell a further 20 used cars a month. Of the cars serviced: 40% will have alloy wheel damage 30% will have…

Fleets asked to participate in online ACFO survey to gauge salary sacrifice take-up

ACFO is asking fleets to participate in its online survey to assess the true level of demand for cars on salary sacrifice schemes from both members and non-members. The organisation last analysed salary sacrifice demand over 18 months ago and says that since then evidence from suppliers would suggest that demand for car salary sacrifice schemes continues to increase. ACFO chairman Damian James said: ‘There continues to be a great deal of talk and media coverage of salary sacrifice schemes as a major development in the UK fleet market. Most vehicle leasing and fleet management service providers now offer some forms of these schemes, but just how popular are they in reality? ‘We want to try and establish the actual impact these schemes are having and will continue to have on the UK company car parc and if salary sacrifice take-up is resulting in…

New Tool for Smart Fleet Managers…

Telematics specialist Masternaut has launched an app that makes tachograph data available for mobile devices, providing fleet managers with a tool to access vehicle and driver information on the move. For all vehicles that are equipped with Masternaut’s TACHOfresh “live” or “remote” functionality, the data generated by the digital tachograph is transmitted to the central web portal. Fleet managers can access details on the whereabouts and behaviour of their drivers at any time and from any given place. The TACHOfresh MOBILE app will now make this data available on smartphones and tablets. Insights include daily and overall mileage, rest duration and vehicle idling, in addition to the exact, real-time location of each vehicle within the fleet. Martin Hiscox, chairman and CEO of Masternaut, commented: ‘With the TACHOfresh MOBILE app, we’re responding to demand from customers to provide telematics data and insights into fleet performance while…
